How to choose an audit firm in the UAE

Written by AccWins tax & advisory team Reviewed by Mr. Waqar Updated

Check four things before appointing a UAE auditor: that the firm is on your free zone's approved list, that it can meet your zone and corporate tax deadlines, that it knows your sector, and that it is independent of your bookkeeping. Ask for a written scope, timetable and fixed fee.

Is the firm on your zone's approved list?

Free zones accept audit reports only from approved firms: DMCC requires a DMCCA approved auditor (MBG), JAFZA keeps its own list (JCA Audit), and ADGM requires a registered auditor (ADGM Registration Authority).

Can it meet your deadlines?

Ask for a timetable working back from the zone deadline, often 90 to 180 days, and the corporate tax return at nine months. QFZPs and businesses above AED 50m revenue need audited statements for tax (Ministerial Decision No. 82 of 2023).

Is it independent?

The firm that keeps your books should not audit them. Separate teams within one firm reduce the risk; separate firms remove it.

What should the engagement letter say?

The scope, the reporting framework (usually IFRS), what you must provide and when, the fee and what changes it, and who signs.

Ten questions for a prospective auditor

  1. Are you on our free zone's approved list? Can we see the listing?
  2. Who will sign the report, and who will do the fieldwork?
  3. Which companies like ours have you audited?
  4. What is the timetable to our zone and tax deadlines?
  5. What do you need from us, and when?
  6. What is the fee, and what would change it?
  7. Will you also test our qualifying income split for corporate tax?
  8. How do you handle disagreements on accounting treatment?
  9. Do you provide any other services to us that could affect independence?
  10. Can we see an example management letter?

Red flags

  • A fee that seems to assume no testing at all.
  • A promise to sign before receiving the trial balance.
  • No questions about your business, stock or related parties.
  • An auditor who also wants to keep your books.

Our view

Choose on timetable and approval, then on price. A cheap audit that misses the zone deadline costs more in fines and renewal delays than the fee you saved.

Frequently asked questions

Is the cheapest audit a good idea?

+

Only if the firm is approved, on time and the report is accepted by banks and the FTA.

Can I change auditors every year?

+

Yes, but continuity saves time and cost.

Do I need a Big Four firm?

+

Not for most SMEs; an approved, experienced firm is enough.

Should the auditor be in the same emirate?

+

Not necessarily; what matters is approval by your zone and capacity to meet your deadlines.
